Jingle All the Way 5k

Great job by all the folks who ran the Jingle All the Way 5k today.

On the men's side, the team took 2nd as an XC tuneup. Jeff Redfern led the way with a 5th overall finish (age group win, 16:22), followed by Josh Sohn (10th, 17:00), Tim Hughes (31st, 18:31), and Alan Pemberton (age group win, 19:34).

We also had a co-ed squad which came in 4th (with 2 women and 1 man). Megan Haberle paced the squad with an 18:56 (age group win, only missed out on 3rd female due to chip/gun difference), Laura Jennings ran 19:59 (5th in age group), and Alan provided the 3rd member.

Judy Chen ran 20:15 as well, coming in 3rd in her age group.

Turkey Trot Roundup

Happy Thanksgiving! Here's a quick roundup of local Turkey Trot results:

Alexandria Turkey Trot 5 Miler:
* Megan Haberle sets a NEW CLUB RECORD (beating her previous record by 6 seconds at the same race last year), finishing 10th among women, running 30:29.
* Rachel Clattenburg cruised the race as a "easy-fast" workout, running the first half easy and the last half hard.  Ends up running a solid time, running 31:44, finishing 15th among women. Rachel also earns yet another spot on the Club Records list.
* Also of note: Drew Killian ran a very quick race, finishing 35th overall with a 29:12.

SOME Trot for Hunger 5K:
* Jeff Redfern tunes up for Club Nationals by finishing 4th overall (16:20) at the SOME Trot for Hunger 5k this morning.

Weekend Racing Roundup - JFK, Philly

Quick updates for November 22-23

JFK 50 Miler:

Daniel Yi - 6:18, 7th overall. See here for race racap.
Matt Wieczorek - 8:10, 89th overall. A big 50 mile PR for Matt, who won a 50K earlier this year. Matt took more than 15 minutes off his previous JFK best. One tough dude.
Miguel Perez - 8:36, 135th overall. What a gamer. Runs two marathons (and two PRs) this season, then throws in a 50 miler. Unreal!

Philadelphia Marathon:

Jenny Paul - 3:08, 59th woman. Jenny runs a 4 minute PR, topping her performance from just a few weeks ago at Marine Corps. Jenny's been on a big roll all season, running impressive times in every race she's done. She's becoming a fixture among DC's fastest women!
Edward Dudlik - 3:28, 1460 overall. Edward makes his debut in a Dojo singlet, putting up his second fastest time ever. And if I do say so myself, looked quite sharp doing it.
Taylor Williamson - 2:56, 215 overall. Taylor manages a heck of a solid time after managing an Achilles problem for the season.

Megan, Shawn, and Alan all ran a 5k Saturday morning. I'm still hunting down the results, but can report that Megan and Shawn made it a Dojo sweep at the top, winning the women's and men's titles.

Big weekend all around!

UPDATE (11/26):
Thanks to Jenny, we found the 5k results. At the Cranberry Crawl 5k, Shawn takes the overall win in 16:34. Megan comes in 11th overall and first woman with an 18:58. Alan wins his age group with a 19:39, and friend of Dojo Cindy Conant wins her age group as well with a 19:48.

JFK 50 Recap

First off, a huge thanks to the many people who played such a big role in the Dojo JFK 50 Mile races today. Running is an individual sport, but our performances and accomplishments are the product of so many people's efforts. In my case:

* Alan's sage training advice,
* Teammates Brian, Miguel, and Matt, who exemplify toughness and, well, craziness,
* A Dojo cheering and pit crew (Rachel, Chris, Drew, Farah, Shawn, Alan, Miriam) at JFK that was by far the envy of the field,
* Workouts with the growing legions of Dojo,
* Drew, Jim, Rachel, Pruitt, Brian, Matt, and others prodding me along during countless long runs,
* Rob Gillanders' efforts to keep me patched together for the past couple months (mainly because of those aforementioned countless long runs, haha)
* Brian's willingness to trek all the way up to Boonsboro on weekends so we could scout the course,
* Virtual supporters who were following the race with rapt attention, and,
* Of course, Jen, who drove like a maniac to every crew spot to provide feed bags, tolerated my spending an unreasonable amount of time training for months, and kept me going today when things got really really bad (oh boy, did they).

As a training group, we probably understand certain aspects of each other more than even our closest family and friends. We know how much work each of us puts in to accomplish goals others might think are arbitrary or even irrational. We can appreciate how satisfying a good race can feel. We can commiserate when a random act of bad luck (flu, rain, food poisoning, you name it) derails months of work. We understand that it probably doesn't make sense to send a long string of texts to someone about Thanksgiving plans at 11 PM the night before their big race. Not only do we get the 5 AM wake-up time to go run, we join you for that run! For all of that, its times like this that make me want to thank all of you for being part of the Dojo community.

Anyway, on to the race.

.US 12K Nationals Race Results

Quick updates:

Josh Sohn sets a new club record in the 12K with a very impressive 41:07 (or 5:31/mile) this morning in Alexandria.

Jeff Redfern keeps a strong season going with a 4:51 road mile, good for fourth overall.

Richmond Marathon Results

RYAN JOHNSON!!!! 2:35:58!!! 10th overall!!! When you see a guy who grinds away, putting in the miles, knocking out workouts with workman-like consistency, and then he runs a huge (12 minute?) PR, it restores a bit of my faith that the universe will sometimes reward hard work and dedication.

Miguel Perez is kind of a maniac. He PR'ed at Marine Corps, came out the very next week for speedwork, and then just ran ANOTHER personal best at Richmond. 2:57:25, 65th overall. Oh, by the way, he's running the JFK 50 Miler next Saturday for team DOJO Racing (after I implored him to join our squad). He's like the winner of the pie eating competition where the prize is way more pie.

Ty Gruszewski appears again, popping up at Richmond with an almost perfectly paced 3:18:27. Ty ran 296th overall, with metronomic efficiency.

Our own Canadian "Beebs," Shannon Beebe, went into Richmond with the goal of running a Boston qualifying time (3:35). So...she ran way faster than that. Shannon checked in with a 3:14:33 today, coming in 33rd among women. Not bad for coming off an Ironman 1.5 months ago.

Finally, Dojo buddy Cindy Conant did her usual thing, with a 1:26:36 half marathon. Cindy came in 22nd overall among women and won her age group by a whopping 10 minutes.

Marine Corps Marathon / MCM 10K / Niagara Marathon 2014 Results

Lots of big results to report.

History will record MCM as an unseasonably warm day with big winds, but we had some great performances out on the course yesterday.

Chris Pruitt continues to astonish. This year, he moved up to Maryland, started a new career, and endured the ups and downs of Penn State football. Training largely solo, cranking 12 mile tempos alone in pre-dawn hours at the local track, Pruitt put together the best single season in Dojo history, setting new records in the 10k, 10 mile, and half marathon. He capped off a fantastic season with a 7th place finish at MCM, running 2:31 and topping a lot of guys who have considerably more time to focus on their training. Pruitt's 7th place is the highest finish ever for a Dojo runner, besting his 8th from a year ago.

We had three PRs yesterday, with Jenny Paul, Jim Moore, and Miguel Perez running faster than ever before.

Jenny ran great late, and unleashed her inner ferocious competitor, chasing down runner after runner up until the very finish. She clawed her way to a top 30 finish (29th woman), running a 3 minute personal best (3:12:20).

Jim Moore elevated his fitness to another level this season, putting together a fantastic stretch of training after healing up a broken toe. It is a testament to how far he's come that a big PR at 2:57:08 (102nd overall) seems like just a stopover to even bigger things. I've done long runs with Jim where he's pushed me to the very limit, and I've personally witnessed the things he's done in workouts, so I have no question he is going sub 2:50 pretty quick.

Miguel Perez has done a handful of workouts with us, so either this means even a few workouts can have magical effects, or the guy is just really talented. Miguel ran a 49 second PR on his way to a 2:51 marathon (52nd overall). Fortunately, I convinced him to join our JFK team in November. The scary thing is, I think he is even better as the distances get longer...

I found out Rob Wolfe was running the night before the race, but I should have figured he'd be running, since he always seems to turn up and perform well at MCM. This year, Wolfe ran 2:51, good for 57th overall at 6th in his age group (which, I believe, gets him an age group award).

Drew Killian showed some guts yesterday, running a 3:00:12. Like Jim, I have witnessed firsthand the strides that Drew has made this season.  He ran a big racing schedule this season, racking up impressive bests at the mile, 5k, 10k, and half marathon.  A relevant data point is that Drew finished in 132nd overall this year, whereas the identical time in last year's race would have resulted in a 280th place finish. Tough conditions!

Stephanie Selmer looked (and by the accounts I heard, felt) great through the halfway point, but wisely pulled the plug after it was clear things were not working quite right. Hoping for a quick recovery so she can flex her speedy talents soon!

Ryan Johnson's breakout season continued at the MCM 10k. Ryan ran 34:22 for 6th overall at the MCM 10k, as one of his final tuneups for Richmond. To borrow a phrase from Clubber Lang, I've got one prediction for anyone who finds themselves running next to this guy at Richmond: Pain. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lSPNQ82Sq4E

****

Marine Corps Marathon wasn't the only racing happening this weekend. Last, but certainly not least, Judy headed up to the Niagara Marathon this weekend. Judy, like Miguel, only has started up workouts with the group, but she has some wheels. She finished as the second overall woman, running a near even split en route to a 3:01:16! I believe this is a big PR for Judy. Great result!

Weekend Racing Roundup - Berlin and Clarendon

Two HUGE results this weekend, with two new marquee club records in the books.

From the cultural, economic, and social capital of the Western World, Clarendon, Virginia.  Megan Haberle and Daniella Orton both run great races at the Clarendon Day 5k, both finishing in the top ten in a fantastic women's field.  Daniella runs a really fast 19:18, coming in exactly 10th. Megan finishes 4th among women, running a NEW CLUB RECORD 5k in 18:15.

The Dojo's attention was on the small town of Berlin this weekend, where Jeff Redfern toed the line at the BMW Berlin Marathon.  Jeff delivered with a big PR and a heck of an impressive race, running 2:35 to finish 119th overall. Jeff's run is plenty good enough to land him on one of the Dojo's most coveted podiums, with the 3rd spot.

She edged out the incredible Cindy Conant, who ran 32:30 (winning her age group by nearly 10 minutes). Alan wins his age group by over 4 minutes in 33:14. Taylor comes in 2nd for his age group and 14th overall, running 30:49. The venerable Chris Hamley comes in 2nd in his age group as well, with a 31:09.

Beach to Beach / Riley's Rumble

Congrats to all those who raced this past weekend.

Beach to Beacon:
Shawn Rumery went back home to race the storied Beach to Beacon 10k in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. Rummy finished 54th overall, in 33:31 (supplanting his previous 2nd fastest Dojo 10k time of 33:42, set last year at the same race).

Riley's Rumble:
Closer to home, a few crazy people from the Dojo raced Riley's Rumble, which is ... a little hilly. Josh Sohn came in 3rd overall, with a 1:21:57. Rob Wolfe ran a very impressive 1:22:39 for 5th, and Ryan Johnson came in 7th with a 1:24:19. Megan Haberle and Alan Pemberton both ended up running chipless, with Megan finishing as the 3rd female (unofficially?). Megan got a nice mention in RunWashington's writeup of the race.

Virginia Wine Country Half Marathon

Fantastic results all around at the Virginia Wine Country Half Marathon this past Saturday.

* The outstanding Dojo women's team easily wins the mixed team competition (as an all women's team!). The results are here, but the five member team of Janet, Rachel, Jenny, Laura, and Marissa scored a total of 43 points, outpacing the next team by 21 (or put another way, they averaged a 1:32 half, compared to 1:37 for the next closest team).

Now on to the individual results, great fast times that took place over what I hear was a pretty hilly course:

* Chris Pruitt - 1:12:43 - running almost 6 minutes ahead of his nearest competitor, wins the men's race, coming within seconds of re-setting his Dojo record.

* Janet Whittaker  - 1:25:56 - 5th woman - makes a huge return to the racing scene after a long injury layoff.

* Rachel "The Machine" Clattenburg - 1:27:20 - 6th woman, 2nd in age group

* Jenny Paul - 1:31:06 - 10th woman, 2nd in age group

* Laura Jennings - 1:32:37 - 14th woman, 5th in age group

* Marissa Piropato - 1:45:34 - 56th woman, 10th in age group

Q&A with Rachel Clattenburg

As part of our continuing Q&A series, here is a quick chat with New Jersey Marathon champ and swell person Rachel Clattenburg:

****

HUGE congratulations on the win at the New Jersey Marathon, and the big PR. According to my research, your 2:57:58 was a nearly 13 minutes faster than your previous best (MCM 2013 - 3:10:36). First off, tell us about the race. What were your goals/was your mindset going in? What was your final race plan?

My goals were to run as close to 3 hours as I could and especially to run a smart race. My race plan--concocted by Dan and Alan, with Drew's advice mixed in--was to reach mile 19 feeling relaxed, comfortable and ready to race the last 7 miles. I settled in with a pack of about 6 guys who were all shooting for 3 hours. We stayed together until mile 18. It helped a ton to have people to run with for all those miles.

It was quite windy and I knew there would be a tough headwind the last 10k. In retrospect, the wind might have helped my race. I was so worried about it and that concern made me more conservative in those first 19 miles than I otherwise might have been.

Updated Club Records / Boston Compiled Results (?)

Lots of updates to club records this weekend. Congrats to Rachel, of course, for her epic performance today winning the New Jersey Marathon by over 10 minutes. She is now the 2nd fastest Dojo marathoner all-time.

ALSO, congrats to Chris Pruitt and Ryan Johnson, who blitzed the Pike's Peek 10k this morning. Pruitt broke his previous club record by about 45 seconds, running 31:37.  Ryan Johnson continued his breakout season, running 34:01 and finally pushing this schlub Daniel Yi off the all-time podium by 7 seconds.

FINALLY, I've compiled (hopefully) a final accounting of all the gutsy performances by Dojo and Friend-of-Dojo runners at Boston. By all accounts, it turned out to be a tough day to run fast. Everyone gave it everything they had, and it was inspiring to watch at Mile 24! Watching everyone crank out there inspired me to get back to training all out, aka Dojo-style.

Women:
Emily Buzzell - 3:14:34
Cindy Conant - 3:12:34
Lisa Coyle - 3:58:15
Laura Jennings - 3:24:40
Jenny Paul - 3:15:47
Marissa Piropato - 3:33:55
Anna Savage - 3:12:42
Stephanie Selmer - 3:23:04

Men:
Keith Flanders       3:12:43
Frank Fung - 3:07:08
Robert Gillanders - 3:06:03
Ty Gruszewski - 3:07:08
Drew Killian - 3:00:58
Jim Moore - 3:08:52
Matthew Newman  - 3:23:17
Alan Pemberton - 3:14:41
Shawn Rumery - 2:41:40
Brian Savitch - 3:18:36
Taylor Williamson    2:52:47

Late adds:
ALSO, Cindy Conant gets a big round of applause for running a 38:04!!!! at Pike's Peek (7th overall) one week after running Boston! That is crazy!

Dojo Fashion Show

Welcome to the Dojo Fashion Show!  Having gone through a five month stretch of injury followed by compensation injury followed by another compensation injury, I've had a chance to indulge a small hobby of mine, shirt design and screen printing. To that end, I've come up with a few new designs for Dojo wear, just in time for the summer season.  I also worked with a patch maker in Pennsylvania who produced a run of Dojo shield embroidered patches (incorporated on some of the shirts/hoodies below).  Take a look at the proposed new designs below and let me know what you think (in terms of shirt color, design color, design style, etc.). The most popular designs will be available to those interested.

See all the designs (and a model wearing Zubaz!) after the break:

Cherry Blossom Results

Congratulations to everyone who raced the Cherry Blossom 10 Miler today. Some huge results from the Dojo today, a LOT of re-writing of the record-books. In a race where all of the best runners in DC (and some of the best in the country) show up to see how they measure up, it was amazing to see all the Dojo singlets so far up the pack.
