Weekend Results

I've heard reports that Jenny Paul won the 12Ks of Christmas Race, held out on the C&O Canal on Saturday. Still looking for results, but it is surely going to make the club records.

Josh Sohn represented Dojo Racing well this weekend in San Francisco, with an 86th place finish at Club Nationals. He ran a very impressive 36:22 over a 10k XC course.

If anyone else has results to share, send them my way!

NYC / Marine Corps / Rock Creek Relay / and much more

LOTS and lots of results to catch up on, from Dojo folks and friends of the club:

NYC
Let's start with the New York City Marathon earlier today. Our own Taylor Williamson was on hand, running 2:55:55. Way to go Taylor!

Parks 10K Sunday November 1, 2015
Shawn Rumery: 35:02, coming in 1st in his age group!

Rockville 5k, Sun, November 1, 2015 (1 week after MCM!)
Miles Aitken: 16:54 (2nd overall)

MCM
Lots of folks put up some great results at MCM:
Jeff Redfern - 2:37:39 - 23rd overall!
Miles Aitken - 2:45:31 - 35th overall! (AND weaved his way through the entire field, after getting caught in the crazy security line situation)
Rick Jennings - 2:46:29 - 38th overall!
Paul Karlsen - 2:51:54 - 56th overall!

Walk to End HIV 5k (it started as a walk, but then the detente clearly dissolved and everyone made a mad dash for the line)
Lisa Swartzfager - 19:40 - 2nd Woman
Henry Wigglesworth - 17:33 - 4th Overall

Rock Creek Relay-
In the inaugural Rock Creek Relay, the Dojo team overcame injury, winning the open men's division in 3:01 and finishing second overall. Congrats to the squad, which included Chris Pruitt making his injury return. Chris basically came off the couch to run 5:40s, which is just mind-blowing. Huge congrats to the team included: Josh Sohn, Alan Pemberton, Laura Jennings, Brian Savitch, and Shlomo Fishman.

Paws2Care 5k
Tom Agnello wins the Paws2Care 5k in Arlington on October 24. Tom runs 19:27 to win by 10 seconds. Congrats Tom!

Chicago Marathon, Oct. 11
Robert Gillanders, physical therapy guru, 3:08.25

Army 10 Miler

Alan Pemberton cruises to a 69:09 at the Army Ten Miler!
Steph Selmer puts up a very impressive 66:20! Laura Jennings almost chases down AP with a 69:52!

Feet in the Street 5k
Josh Sohn checks in with a 3rd place finish at Feet in the Street, with a 17:45!
Lisa Swartzfager runs 21:23, for 2nd among all women!

Navy Mile
Alan Pemberton and Henry Wigglesworth show off their speed at a blustery Navy Mile. Alan comes in second for his age group, running 5:48.  Henry wins his age group with a 5:24.

Clarendon Day 5k
Alan runs a 19:09 5k, winning his age group by about 4 minutes!

Navy Air Force Half
Way back in September (I've been terrible about updates!), folks ran some awesome races at the Navy Air Force Half:
Jeff Redfern - 1:14:31 (new entry in the club records!) - 15th overall
Chris Higby - 1:17:54 - SUPER impressive gains by Chris Higby over the past season!

Parks Half Marathon, Sept. 13, 2015
Laura Jennings: 1:32:57

If I missed any results, it is truly due to incompetence and not indifference!

Navy/Air Force Half Marathon

Results from Alan:

Congrats to Jeff Redfern , Chris Higby, and Jenny ("the Unchipped") Paul, who ran the Navy Half in 1:14:32 1:17:54, and 0:00:00, respectively.  Chris set PRs at the 10K and 10M as well as HM, so big congrats to Chris.  And not bad to Jeff, finishing 14th while running goal marathon pace.  Also well done to erstwhile/sometime Dojo runners Rachel Clattenburg and Drew Killian, who ran 1:25:45 and 1:21:55, respectively.  If I've missed anyone, let Dan know about it.

Weekend Results

Lehigh Valley Marathon:

Lisa Swartzfager comes in 5th among women, with a 3:12. Looks like a well-paced race, with Lisa picking up a bunch of spots over the last couple miles to get herself on the podium. Great job by Lisa!

Ironman Wisconsin:
John Doyle comes in 180th place overall (out of 2990 competitors), 39th in his age group. He ran an 11:03 overall. John picked up spots the entire way, going from 178th in his age group in the swim, to 41st after the bike, to 39th after the run. And he vastly exceeds my projected performance in an Ironman, which is: getting fished out of a lake by safety boats.

Parks Half Marathon:

Laura Jennings checks in with a 1:32:57, coming in 19th for women at the Parks Half this morning. She was joined by Shlomo Fishman, with a 1:21:44, Rob Wolfe, with a 1:21:08 (3rd in his age group), and Alan Pemberton, with a 1:35:47 (it is almost needless to say, but Alan wins his age group by 2 minutes).

Great job everyone! And as usual, if I missed anyone, it is due to incompetence, not indifference. Please let me know so I can update the post.

Fifth Avenue Mile:

Henry Wigglesworth runs a 4:55, age-graded to a 4:04, and finished as the fastest 57 yr old in the field.

Jenny Paul Wins!!! Alan Wins!!! Riley's Rumble Results!

Huge congrats to Jenny Paul, who is in the middle of a huge leap right now. She wins the Summer Strides 5k this weekend in 19:23, finishing 8th Overall.

Also big tip of the hat to Alan Pemberton, who wins the 60-69 division at the Alton Old Home Week 5k in 20:40. It was a battle of two legends of masters running, as Alan duked it out with John Tuttle, a 1984 Olympian in the marathon (2:10 PR).

Last week, Miles Aitken narrowly finishes behind former Footlocker finalist Scott Munro, running 1:17:58 at Riley's Rumble fast enough for 4th overall. Taylor runs 1:26:46 for 10th, and Frank runs 1:32:56 for 26th.

Great job everybody, wish I could be out there running with you. As usual, any omissions are due solely to my negligence as opposed to malice. Please let me know if I missed anything!

Crystal City 5k / Burning River 100M / Ironman Canada

Lots of results this weekend! A quick roundup, going from shortest distance to longest:

Great job by the guys, with a lot of depth showing this weekend:
Jeff Redfern - 16:50
Josh Sohn - 16:51
Miles Aitken - 17:02
Chris Higby - 17:17
Taylor Williamson - 17:52
Alan Pemberton -19:29 (wins his age group by 4 minutes)

The Summer of Jenny Paul continues. She breaks the heady 20 minute mark in the 5k, running a 19:45 and coming in second in her age group.

Also, great job (even if it's in a red singlet) by Rachel Clattenburg, running a very quick 18:11, and Drew Killian, who ran 18:04.

Matt Wiezcorek comes in THIRD OVERALL at the Burning River 100 Miler this Saturday in Ohio, setting a new men's club record for time and insanity! Great race from Matt, who worked his way up from the field steadily. If the tracker is correct, he surged up the field around the 40 mile mark, and was in a pitched battle throughout the last 60 miles, jockeying for the lead. I remember sitting in the Woolly Mammoth theater on Saturday night, thinking, "good gracious, I've had breakfast, lunch, and dinner, watched several Netflix shows, and now am comfortably sitting here, watching a 2.5 hour long stage production, and Matt has been running this entire time." That is mind-boggling to me.

Shannon Beebe then decided to go out and do an Ironman on Sunday. Our favorite Canadian (edging bacon, and even the collective Cowboy Junkies) finished in an outstanding 11:51:35, 54th overall woman. Wow!!!

Lawyers Have Heart 2015

Perhaps no race is more targeted at the Dojo than Lawyers Have Heart. The ultimate DC distance running throwdown for attorneys.

This year, in hot, humid weather, over a crazy course, Dojo runners took home several big honors.

Chris Higby is ready for action!

The categories seem to change a bit every year, and one tweak for 2015 was adding in an "Overall Legal" category. I take this to be the fastest legal professional of any denomination. Well, Dojo swept the top two men's spots, with Jeff Redfern (34:36) and Josh Sohn (35:42). Jeff joins a long line of Dojo runners (well, mostly Chris Pruitt) as the fastest lawyer in DC. Chris Higby rounded things out, winning his age group in 38:49. Also noteworthy is that Chris Higby led the Covington team to the team title for Large Law firms joining PJ, Chris, Alan, and me as folks who have previously carried C&B to the coveted team win.

On the women's side, Jenny Paul ran a heck of a race, coming in 4th overall in 40:48 and battling some great runners in the process. Laura Jennings is crowned DC's fastest government attorney (42:45). Lisa Swartzfager got the most out of doing a single run with us, winning the title as DC's fastest associate (43:36).

Ottawa Marathon Recap

Fun and fast times in Ottawa last weekend! A large crew headed north of the border, ready to rock the Canadian red.

First, a few behind the scenes shots from the race:

Ottawa Sub 3 Crew

We are staying in this awfully cheap hotel, that doesn't seem like a gigantic mansion at all. Here is most of the sub three crew today, in our race shirts. Not pictured: rachel (2:56!) and Drew (2:52!). Big PRs all around!

Racing Roundup - April 11-12

I've been WAY behind on putting out a racing roundup. Here are the basics for the past couple weeks. I'm sure I will probably miss some results, please be assured that any omissions are due to my incompetence and not my mean-spiritedness.

Saturday, April 11
US 100K Champs (Mad City 100K) - Madison, WI:
Another race, another learning experience! Most memories are hazy at this point, but I do remember a few things:
* A huge, and quite delicious, sushi dinner the night before the race. When the restaurant puts four sets of chopsticks in your bag based on your personal order, you've ordered a lot of sushi.
* Seeing a giant tree branch (itself the size of a medium-sized tree) take a 50 foot drop and landing about 10 feet from me around the 65K mark. Me being so tired at that point that it took me a couple miles to realize, 'whoa, that was really dangerous!'
* Jen standing at the aid station for 7+ hours gamely managing one sometimes grumpy runner and his way-too-elaborate system of 4 different bottles (each with a different beverage), 10 assorted ziploc bags, and two bottles of electrolyte tablets.
There were some ups and downs, but in the end, I managed a second place finish in 7:15. Bad news is that I really would have loved the win, but the silver lining is that the time was fast enough to be in the selection pool for the US 100k national team. HUGE thanks to crew chief supreme Jen, who once again talked me into staying in the race when the chips were down and kept me on track.

Sunday, April 12
Cherry Blossom 9.39 Miler
Probably our best club performance to date, from top to bottom. Tons of great performances across the board. In particular, some great team performances, where we nearly won the club competition for both men and women.

The open men's team came in second out of 14 teams, a mere 1:24 behind Capital Area Runners and ahead of great teams like PR Racing and MCRRC.  Jeff Redfern ran possibly his best race in a Dojo singlet, crushing a 50:50 and coming in 42nd overall. Josh Sohn was mere seconds behind, with a 51:16 and 52nd overall. Geoff King powered through with a 55:22, which is pretty remarkable given that he has only started cranking up the workouts. Jack Kelly runs a solid 58:39, and Shawn Rumery checks in with a relaxed, almost somnambulent 1:15:57.

The masters team came in 3rd out of 12 teams, led by Jim Moore (58:35, running stride for stride with Joan Samuelson), Jen Maranzano (59:00, 6th in age group, coming off crewing the day before, flying in at 9 PM the night before this race!), Alan Pemberton (1:01:55, 2nd in age group), and Robert Gillanders (1:02:41, 22d in age group).

The open women's team came in 2nd out of 8 teams, with some great runs. Rachel ran a very solid 59:15 as she preps for Ottawa. Judy Chen ran 1:00:56 as a pre-London tune-up. Jenny Paul ran a 1:02:38, and Laura Jennings runs a 1:03:45.

There were plenty of other great races as well. Megan ran a fantastic 56:13, finishing third in her age group, not an easy thing to do at a deep race like Cherry Blossom. Ryan Johnson ran a 52:12, narrowly besting his former roommate. Shlomo Fishman led his MCRRC team with a 55:08, and Frank Fung led another MCRRC team with a 1:01:52.

Various Results

Great job by everyone. Particularly the brave, dashing, and daring that took on the TJ Pi Miler this weekend. It takes a particular kind of nobility to lose gracefully to a ruddy-faced high school lad. Also, big congrats to Shawn Rumery, who won my hometown race last weekend after jogging nine miles to get to the start line. Very promising results at the DC Rock N Roll Half Marathon as well.

DC Rock N Roll Half Marathon:
Jen Maranzano: 1:24:43 (1st master, 2nd fastest Dojo half)
Rachel Clattenburg: 1:27:37
Judy Chen: 1:28:55
Laura Jennings: 1:32:13
Matthew Wiezcorek: 1:20:06

Miguel Perez: 2:48:34 (9th place overall)
Rob Wolfe: 3:01 (39th, 5th age)

Fort Hunt 10K (Last Week):
Shawn Rumery: 35:45 (1st place overall)

Fwd: RunWashington Rankings

Just a heads up that the RunWashington rankings are out:

* Chris Pruitt and Rachel Clattenburg are both fourth in their respective genders.
* Jeff Redfern is 14th.
* Friend of Dojo Cindy Conant is 8th.
* Miguel Perez is first in the 30-39s

Also, though it nearly slipped by notice, Megan Haberle shaved a couple seconds off her previous 5k club record at the St. Pats Day 5k. Club records have been updated, but if I've missed anyone, please let me know.

Weekend Race Report/News You Can Use

WEEKEND RESULTS:

A few highlights from the weekend of racing -

* Jen Maranzano won the Reston 10 Miler (or Res10n Miler - yes, this is their preferred name) this Sunday in 64:17. Very exciting race, where Jen bided her time behind the two top women for the entire race, until taking the lead for the first and last time at the 8 mile mark.

Dan Yi was a distant 2 seconds behind Jen at the finish. She outkicked him as he sprinted to the finish so he could experience what it was like to break a finishing line tape.

* Megan Haberle came in second at the St. Patrick's Day 5k (or the St. Patri5k's Day) on Sunday, running 18:13, neck and neck with the women's winner, and edging third place by a couple seconds. Judging by results, a furious sprint to the finish.

Shlomo Fishman (17:27, 10th), Taylor Williamson (17:40, 13th), and Tim Hughes (18:04, 21st) all finished near the top of the standings! Note, Tim did this while also running the 10k right after.

* The St. Patrick's Day 10k also saw lots of action.

Rachel Clattenburg checks in with a 7th overall, sneaking under the 40 minute barrier (39:59). Cindy Conant wasn't far behind, running 40:40 and winning her age group, by a lot. Judy Chen comes in second in her age group with a 40:47.

Among the men, JFK man Matt Wieczorek led the way with a 36:43 (22nd), closely followed by Drew Killian in 37:24 (27th), and doubling crazy person Tim Hughes (39:03, 47th)

Fwd: [Dojo News] Racepacket year-end rankings are out

Congratulations to all the Dojo runners who made the year-end rankings!
