GW Birthday Marathon Relay Results

The Dojo had a great early season showing Sunday morning at the GW Birthday Marathon Relay. Held annually in Greenbelt, Maryland, the GW Birthday Marathon is turning into an annual rite of passage for Dojo-ites to shake off the rust and stretch the legs.

Last year, we sent one co-ed and one open men's squad. After a pitch battle, we swept the top two spots, with the co-ed squad coming out on top.

This year, we sent three full teams, two in the open men's and one in the masters men's categories. Our open men's entries consisted of the "Stripes" (Brian Savitch, Steve Moore, and Geoff King) and "Stars" (PJ Martinez, Richard Rainey, and me) squads. Our masters entry was a talent-loaded squad, with Rob Wolfe, Rob Gillanders, and Nick Haffenreffer.

End result: a fantastic showing. The three teams opened up plenty of space on the rest of the field after great opening legs, and PJ came into the exchange zone with a few seconds on Rob and Brian. Steve ran a great middle leg to take the lead for the "Stripes" squad, and the "Stripes" team, anchored by Geoff, maintained the edge all the way to the finish line. Stripes squad takes the overall win, with the Masters team coming in second (first masters team), and the Stars squad rounding out the top three (2nd open men's team).

Great job to all those who raced today.
