Thanks to Judy Chen for the photo. The ignominious results of the Dojo 2016 Ugly Race Shirt Exchange. Unlike running, there were no winners in this competition.

National Capital 20 Miler
Congrats to Jeff Redfern and Shlomo Fishman, who finished 1/2 at the National Capital 20 Miler. Jeff bests his previous club record for a 20 miler (which, admittedly, was a bit of a training run). Shlomo enters the annals for (what I think is) the first time!

Weekend Roundup
Lots of big results to share:
- First off, congrats to the tireless one, Robin Watkins, who came in 3rd at the Cascade Crest 100M in Easton, Washington on August 27. That was an epic performance where Robin went toe-to-toe with some outstanding runners and came out on the podium! Robin finished in 23:47, which is pretty darn fast.
- Another congrats to Jenny Paul for a new addition in the club records. Jenny ran the Kentlands 5k in 18:41, coming in second place.
- At the same race, Chris Pruitt continued to depress me, running 16:15 (i.e., much faster than I have ever hoped to run a 5k) in his continued comeback. That was fast enough for fourth place.
- Jeff Redfern (pictured above) gets the overall win at the Larry Noel Half Marathon. Jeff runs 1:16:05 off what I imagine is another massive week of training. Fair warning to anyone who catches him when he actually tapers...

Weekend Results - Beach2Beacon, Going Green, Burning River
Beach 2 Beacon -
Jen runs a 37:47 for a new club record (first woman to break 38 minutes), and picks up a nice check for 2nd overall master. Huge thanks to Shawn Rumery, who ran most of the race with Jen before kicking to the finish (37:39). Jeff then went on to win the mile, running 4:53. Taylor followed in 5:16, along with Tim Grezsler in 5:21.
Taylor, Tim, Jeff, and Chris then all teamed up to win the coveted 4X400 title, running 4:00.8!
Riley's Rumble (July 30th) -
Jeff Redfern claims 2nd place with a 1:18 at the brutally hard Riley's Rumble Half Marathon. A really solid time for the course and conditions!
Crystal City Twilighter (July 23rd) -
Jenny Paul continues to have a great summer, running 19:05 on a hot day. That was good for 14th woman in a very impressive field. Jeff Redfern runs 16:53 for 29th among the men.

A Dojo Farewell to Feet
From our stalwart - Shawn Rumery, who is leaving to start the Dojo of Maine.
Beloved Dojoers- The time has come to announce a bittersweet but unsurprising move back to Maine. That's right folks. Kaly and I are taking our talents Down East. Well, mid-cost Maine to be exact (those Downeasterners can be awfully protective of their identity).
Looking forward to making the most of my last month with Dojo HQ! See you at HP!
While we're very excited to be moving to Maine, leaving Dojo HQ to become a charter member of Dojo New England might be the toughest part of the transition. For close to 6 years now my dojo ROI has been through the roof. Consider:
- Investment
- Up to 6 hours/week
- Nominal clothing fees
- Few hours of sleep/week
- Race fees for silly events like the GW Birthday Marathon that is required to be held on the coldest, windiest most inhospitable day for running.
- Return
- Mostly normal running partners, available at paces ranging from Pruitt to dead legs
- Considerable leniency with missed workouts and races slept through and/or wimped out from
- Advice from dojo sages and not-so-sages
- Random spectators screaming at you at Boston because of the brand recognition Dan Yi has so carefully engineered
- Yearly super bowl fiesta
- Running companionship, every Tuesday and Thursday, rain, shine (like Josh Sohn caked in sunscreen shine), cold (like Alan wears goggles cold), wind, heat, or even hurricane.
Looking forward to making the most of my last month with Dojo HQ! See you at HP!

Cherry Blossom Results
I guess the wind and the home course helps! A huge day for the Dojo
at the Cherry Blossom 10 Miler. The biggest news: we won a Cherry
Blossom team category for the first time, as our women's team took the
open club competition. We also had a valiant 8th place finish by one of
our men's teams in the club competition. Also, Jen Maranzano made it
onto Cherry Blossom's virtual podium, finishing 25th among women. What a
bad year to have the awards ceremony cancelled!
Some lucky folks got to hang with Meb. |
Here are the results. As always, if I missed your result, it was incompetence, not intention. Shoot me an email so I can make amends.
